Math Placement Policy

The policies associated with placing students into mathematics classes at Utah Tech University follow published guidelines that are structured according to demonstrated skill levels. Each student is placed into their next mathematics course based on one of the following:

  • ACT or SAT math score
  • A college math placement exam score
  • A qualifying grade in a prerequisite math course at UT

Students are advised that a long hiatus from formal math instruction could compromise their ability to perform well in class. For this reason, even if high ACT scores were obtained in high school, placement scores or course grades more than two years old are considered invalid for placement purposes. In this situation, new placement scores using the ALEKS PPL math placement test will be required.

ALEKS PPL
MATH PLACEMENT TEST

Utah Tech University provides the ALEKS PPL Math Placement Test, an online assessment designed to evaluate students’ math skills and readiness for college-level math courses. This test is available if you need or prefer a new score. (Placement scores or course grades do expire after two years.) Students can pay a fee for the placement test and have up to 5 attempts to achieve their highest score. The test is administered at the Utah Tech Testing Center. To improve their placement, students are encouraged to use the ALEKS PPL review software before taking the proctored exam.
