Math Placement Policy

The policies associated with placing students into mathematics classes at Utah Tech University follow published guidelines that are structured according to demonstrated skill levels. Each student is placed into their next mathematics course based on one of the following:

  • ACT or SAT math score
  • A college math placement exam score
  • A qualifying grade in a prerequisite math course at UT

Students are advised that a long hiatus from formal math instruction could compromise their ability to perform well in class. For this reason, even if high ACT scores were obtained in high school, placement scores or course grades more than two years old are considered invalid for placement purposes. In this situation, new placement scores using the ALEKS PPL math placement test will be required.

Course Placement Requirements

ALEKS PPL
MATH PLACEMENT TEST

Students who wish to improve their mathematics placement are encouraged to utilize the ALEKS PPL review software before attempting the ALEKS PPL math placement exam. This review can be completed at the student’s own pace online or in a more structured format in the Math Bridge Course (see below). Students can use their UT sign-on credentials to sign up for ALEKS PPL here. A 12-month ALEKS PPL subscription currently costs $20 and includes diagnostic testing and individualized remediation. When a student is ready, they can pay $10 to take a proctored version of the exam at the UT Testing Center for course placement.

More Details

All advanced classes require one of the previous classes as a prerequisite

In addition, students are advised that a long hiatus from formal math instruction could compromise their ability to perform in class. This is true even if high ACT scores were obtained in high school, and several years have elapsed since the tests were taken.

Placement scores or classes with scores/grades more than two years old will be considered invalid. In this situation, new placement scores will be required.
